ACHIEVING SUCCESS THROUGH PEOPLE
By Mr. M. V. Vasudevan, Vice President - Human Resources, Parryware Roca

The Human Resources team has a critical role to play in an organization irrespective of its size and products as it is a business Unit responsible for processes affecting the "people resources" in an organization. In brief 3 R R R is the Key, that is Recruitment, Retention and Retirement and even beyond - a truly End to End Solutions and partners to the people who makes the business prosper - From a managing to performing an asset whose capacity is infinite and never depreciates instead appreciates as it goes.

Every organization has to conduct a human resources audit for compliance with legislative requirements, the development of competencies for the future and also to ensure that steps to support the human resources strategic direction are being followed.

The move from a staff function to as a strategic partner- changes the image of HR to that of a strategic partner in setting and supporting the business focus - and this should be the important customer need. HR should work to fulfill and exceed their expectations. HR should understand the intricacies of their role, the importance of their input in the board room, HR cannot continue to play a secondary role in the management of the business - a major shift is the order of the day - a shift from shop floor to Board room perspective.

Learning to think and act like a CEO can only help them increase their effectiveness as the Manager of the people assets of the organization because many organization declares at some point that people are its important asset, and if that so it makes sense that the person in charge of those "valuable assets" would be chosen to rise to the level of CEO. Dream to become a CEO and work for it from a "strictly behind the scenes player'

Build an "HR Brand" - You will note from the business side of the enterprises that great products seldom succeed on their own merit and that people and functions are no different. They need a great "brand" to succeed. It is good for your image and it is also good for the firms' image, there are two basic approaches, internal and external - start with a focused strategy that includes building a brand name both for the leader of the team and for their function. Develop separate mission and value statements for the HR department from the overall Mission and Vision statements of the company.

To know the financials - HR should understand and should be able to define the organization's success measures, margins, profile, ROI and productivity - in short understand the business in deeper sense more that satisfaction score, balance score card etc - demonstrate the impact in two prime areas, on customer value and on shareholder value. - try to get more HR results in the annual report. If you cannot measure activities you cannot manage. The qualitative factors need to be quantified.

ANTICIPATING AND FORECASTING

They should start to monitor and forecast the external business environment so that they can prepare managers for such events. When HR begins to make forecasts and to predict trends and events it not only shows that it is forward looking but also that it is willing to take a risk and to put its reputation on the line, based on its forecast. HR needs to develop "smoke detector" metrics that offer an early warning to managers about upcoming problems and HR can proactively work prevent them.

FOCUS ON BUILDING A COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE

Beating the competitor (and even crushing) is essential if you are to dominate in a fast changing business environment, that means HR to move beyond "internal" activities to a firms external competitors to ensure that "everything we do" in HR is better than everything "they do in HR". Make the employees and the Management believe that you add value.

The speed of change is an essential element for any successful corporation in the 21st century. HR has a reputation for changing at the "speed of rock" so that HR team must become the "drive of corporate change" and they have to do it at internet speed. This means changing the "DNA" of HR by retraining some team members and by replacing others.

You need to be more aggressive, build your image, and focus on metrics and on results that impact the bottom line and you need to dramatically change the way you think and act.

Finally build trust through constant feedback - feedback should be honest, frank and spontaneous.

CHANGE IS THE ONLY CHANGELESS LAW- CHANGE FOR THE BETTER.

TALK OF THE COUNTRY - SWINE FLU

What Parents Need to Know about Swine Flu?

Swine flu is certainly curable with timely intervention, correct diagnosis and a five-day medication says a Delhi based doctor. He also says you need not panic; you need to be careful now. If required, let you children stay home till the situation becomes normal.

  • If your child has fever, throat infections, body ache, consult doctor.
  • Must go to a doctor at any government facility meant for swine flu.
  • Swine flu testing is done only at government hospitals. If you go to Private Hospital, Check whether they are authorized to do the testing.
  • Nose and throat swabs will be taken and tested.
  • Child will not be quarantined if there are no symptoms.
  • If clinical symptoms exist, child will be hospitalized.
  • Act early to ensure quick recovery.

In times of crisis the worst thing is to panic so if you or your family member is having flu-like symptoms without wasting time go to the nearest designated hospital or doctor and get tested if he advises. If you have any queries don't listen to rumors and panic, call toll free helplines: 1075 or 1800-11-4377.

Some specific precautions to be taken against H1N1:

  • A mask to cover your nose and mouth is a must. These are not just regular masks but a special one called N-95 which filters microbes in the air that you inhale and exhale.
  • A mask is a must when you are in a high-risk situation particularly when you have to go to a hospital to get tested and you have to be in the waiting room. Also keep the mask on when you are in a crowded place.
  • Cover your mouth surely while coughing and sneezing turn your head and cough into your shoulder.
  • Wash your hands in case there is body contact with someone who's got cold and cough.

JOB IS HAPPY OR NOT, YOU DECIDE

Some people feel trapped in unfulfilling; uninspiring careers and are searching for a resource to jumpstart a new working life. But actually loving work is not a luxury reserved for the healthy or the wealthy, the brilliant or the beautiful, the married or independent. It's a real, attainable possibility for every individual everywhere.

While many workers feel bored, unrecognized, and unchallenged, some greet each new workday with pleasure and a sense of anticipation. What's their secret? There are concrete connections between each one's job and his/her unique combination of skills, character, and personality.

If you find yourself longing for greener work pastures, don't immediately go looking for the first exit ramp off of your chosen career path. Consider these 6 tips for staying happy at work.

  • Don't Worry: When you're preoccupied with personal issues, it's difficult to concentrate or be happy at work. Just as you need to let go of work to enjoy your time at home, it's important to leave personal worries at home so you can focus and be productive at work.
  • Create an Office Nest: Make your space your own, decorate your area as much as your company policy permits, and make yourself as comfortable and relaxed as you can be in your office.
  • Develop an Office Support System: Gathering a circle of colleagues who share similar backgrounds or lifestyles can take a lot of pressure off you at work.
  • Be Organized: When you feel overwhelmed, it tends to intensify dissatisfaction. By being proactive and taking control, employees can feel a sense of satisfaction, enhanced confidence and motivation.
  • Don't Try to Change Your Coworkers: You can't change anyone; you can only change the way you react to them. Don't let other people's actions affect you. Just figure out a way to resolve conflicts and avert uncomfortable situations.
  • Focus on the Positive: Identify the things that you like at work, even if they are as simple a small jovial talk withas your coworkers or the nice view from your office window. You create your own mind-set. If you stress the positives, you will make your job more enjoyable. Worrying about the negatives may cause you to become snowed under.
Happiness is not a one-time product. It is a state of mind which you create each moment within. It is much worthy living happily at work than being unsatisfied.

LEANING TOWER OF PISA HAS NEVER BEEN STRAIGHT

Soon after building started in 1173, the foundation of the Pisa tower settled unevenly. Construction was stopped, and was continued only a 100 year later. It then became visibly clear that the Tower of Pisa is leaning, tilting to the south.

Since regular measuring of the tower began in 1911, the top of the tower has moved 1,2 millimeters (0,05 inch) per year. Today the top of the Tower of Pisa is some 5,3m (17,4 ft) off-centre.

After the bell tower of the Cathedral of Pavia collapsed in 1989, the Consorzio Progetto Torre di Pisa (Tower of Pisa Project Consortium) commissioned engineers to stabilize the Leaning Tower. Because the Tower tilted in different directions in its first years, it is slightly curved, like a banana. Engineers are working on the footing of the Tower rather than the structure, hoping to ease the top back about 20 cm (about 8 inches). But it means that the 800-year old tower will remain leaning.

The Leaning Tower of Pisa stands in the Piazza dei Miracoli (Miracle Square) in the town of Pisa, Italy.

There are 296 steps to the top of the Leaning Tower of Pisa.

O B T DOES MAGIC IN CORPORATE

Outward Bound Training Programs do magic in corporate team, when it is done properly through qualified people. When does one go for an OBT? The answer is you don't go because you have to; you go because it is needed!!! An outbound is an outcome of an in-depth Training Need Analysis, which suggests that an OBT will be the preferred method to help the employees discover and learn.

An Outbound Training Program can address the following needs:

1) Discovering Team Members strengths and weaknesses
2) Getting rid of Competitive and Arrogant behaviours, Provide opportunities to understand the team members in more Personal Way.
3) Surfacing & closure of conflicts
4) Inculcating a sense of determination and a "can-do-attitude"
5) Identifying & developing leaders
6) Mending personal and organizational communication barriers
7) Discovering ways to be motivated
8) Fostering faith & trust
9) Enhancing self or group confidence
10) Challenging one-self or team to complete what earlier may have seemed as improbable tasks

The other important aspects are the design of the outbound and the team who is going to do the program. If you expect to derive maximum learning, a one or a one and a half day is just not recommended. It has to be spread for a minimum of two days and a maximum of five days. Only then will a lasting impact take place. One has to keep in mind that activities like rappelling, abseiling, river crossing, rafting, or any other physical activities can be a real treat, but if the only lesson derived out them is only fun or adventure, then the OBT ceases to be a learning based program. Hence the facilitators have to ensure that they derive a maximum of three of the above thirteen aspects in their facilitation. If there exists more than four objectives, then either the program needs more time for execution or other development solutions could be applied. The OBT should factor enough time for introspection and retrospection hence giving time for people to talk to one another in a non-threatening environment. At the end of the program, the group should decide to actively work on not more than a couple of action points which the facilitator or the manager reviews once in a month for the next 3 months at least.

In conclusion, a well thought of and well designed OBT has a far lasting effect than any in-house training can deliver.

U2 TIPS

Fluid Conservation Systems

Leak detection units easily installed on pipe-fittings and held in place by magnets and can be deployed throughout the plumbing system to continuously monitor leaks.

Attached to existing faucets turn a manual faucet into an infra-red no-touch sensor faucet.

NET BANKING

Banking has become an important part of life for meeting the needs of finance. However, banking operations like fund transfer, payments etc. are time consuming and each minute of daily life is important due to much busy life.

The problem of saving time has been solved by Net-Banking. In Net-Banking much operations which takes time when done by a person by personally visiting bank for small works, are done on Net-Banking by just sitting at home within minutes and not going to the bank for every small work personally always. It is one of the main benefits of Net-Banking.

In Net-Banking, money does not deal directly, instead funds only transfer. The amount where added that credited and from where deducted, debited from that account.

Benefits of Banking

At the time of payment after shopping on Net-Banking, we can make payment.

For transferring money from one account to another in same bank, there is no need to go personally just use password and account information like name, account number etc. to transfer funds and the deducted account will be debited and amount added would be credited.

On Net-Banking, complete summary of account in some banks can be checked if the bank provides the Net-Banking service to its customers.

On one hand Net-Banking is of great importance, but its security aspects also need to be taken care.

On line, frauds in transactions done through web also happen. Hackers try to steal and access to the necessary account information and do frauds of millions. We should not give away our account information until and unless it is required and genuine. Frequently change your password.

PICTURE THAT MOVES

80/20 RULE

The Pareto Principle (80/20) states that for many phenomenon 80% of the consequences would result from 20% of the causes. This idea has rule of thumb application in many places.

Some of the applications include:

  • 20% of any advertising campaign produces 80% of the response
  • 20% of the Employees perform 80% of the work
  • 20% of the clients are responsible for 80% of the revenues and profits

This principle was observed and suggested by a management thinker Joseph M Juran. He named it after an Italian economist Vilfredo Pareto who observed in 1897 that 80% of the property in Italy was owned by 20% of the Italian population.
