How to Be a Good Boss in a Bad Economy

Most of the bosses are operating in difficult and sometimes unfamiliar territory. Equipped with skills and approaches honed over long years of business growth, they now find their roles defined by an unexpected question: How should people be managed when fear is in the air, confidence is slipping, and it looks as if the road ahead will remain rough for many miles? This isn't the job most executives and managers signed on for, and not everyone will rise to the occasion. This article is to help those who want to do so-first by clarifying why it's so hard to be a good boss, and then by sharing the essence of what the best bosses do during tough times.

Your Own Making

It's never easy to be a great boss, even in good economic times. It's challenging in part because of an unfortunate dynamic that naturally arises in relationships of unequal power. Research confirms what many of us have long suspected: People who gain authority over others tend to become more self-centered and less mindful of what others need, do, and say. That would be bad enough, but the problem is compounded because a boss's self-absorbed words and deeds are scrutinized so closely by his or her followers. Combined, these tendencies make for a toxic tandem...

Even in the best of times, bosses fall prey to this toxic tandem. Your own stress presses you to shut down emotionally, to focus attention on what your superiors are up to, to turn inward and wrestle with your fears. The heightened threat causes your followers to watch your moves even more closely, How can well-intentioned bosses avoid the toxic tandem? By mindfully taking attention from themselves in order to give it to their people's challenges and worries. Bosses who do so will find that in stressful times people have an acute-and often unmet-need for four remedies: predictability, understanding, control, and compassion.

How can well-intentioned bosses avoid the toxic tandem? By mindfully taking attention from themselves in order to give it to their people's challenges and worries. Bosses who do so will find that in stressful times people have an acute-and often unmet-need for four remedies: predictability, understanding, control, and compassion.

Making the Best of a Bad Situation

Providing Predictability

The importance of predictability in people's lives is hard to overstate, and has been demonstrated in numerous studies. The same holds true for organizational shocks like layoffs. If you give people as much information as you can about what will happen and when it will happen, they will prepare to the extent they can and suffer less. Just as important, they can learn to relax in the absence of such a warning.

Increasing Understanding

If predictability is about what will happen and when, understanding is about why and how. The chief advice here is to accompany any major change with an explanation of what makes it necessary and what effect it will have-in as much detail as possible. This advice, too, is rooted in psychological research: Human beings consistently react negatively to unexplained events. The effect is so strong that it is better to give an explanation they dislike than no explanation at all, provided the explanation is credible.

Beware the Cone of Silence

Good bosses also know that more than a single communication is needed to bring a large group to a real understanding when operations are going haywire, it's especially hard to get new ideas to take root or to teach new behaviours of any complexity. Your job as boss is to design messages that will get through to people who are distracted, upset, and apt to think negatively given any ambiguity. When it comes to internal communications, your mantra should be "Simple, concrete, and repetitive."

Affording Control

People don't embark on careers to feel powerless. The whole point of work is to achieve outcomes and have impact. That's why people are so deeply frustrated when events seem to render them helpless. As a boss in a bad economy, you may not be able to give people much control over what happens, but it's important that they have as much say as possible in how and when it happens.

Showing Compassion

Compassion can and does take many forms. At its heart it is as simple as adopting the other person's point of view, understanding his anxiety, and making a sincere effort to soothe it. Compassion is most important when it helps people retain their dignity. When layoffs and closings are unavoidable, tending to the emotional needs of people who are let go is essential both for them and for those who survive the cuts. One of the worst things a boss can do after a layoff is to bad-mouth or in any other way demean those who have departed. Even if you believe that you've cut out the deadwood, saying so will anger and demoralize your remaining employees and may drive the best of them to jump ship.

The Sign of a Great Boss

Bosses who increase predictability, understanding, control, and compassion for their people will allow employees to accomplish the most in a time of anxiety-and will earn their deep loyalty. A manager who provides all four will be perceived as "having people's backs." That's a good phrase to keep in mind when you know your people are feeling vulnerable, because it will inform all your actions, big and small.

How to be a GREAT BOSS:

  • Make some hackneyed joke that each of us could have stepped in and completed after a short while, showing genuine warmth.
  • Explicitly reward loyalty, Give Recognition and single people out in company presentations and build up those who showed real commitment.
  • Insist on excellence and hold people accountable. Reward performance not with money but with responsibility and the status that came with the attention.
  • Make oneself visible. Build Your own brand and style. Update and enhance your core expertise.
  • Stand for your people and organization with others ( Investors, Partners and Competitors ).

TRANSPARENT GROUP BUILDING

Getting right people for the right job is essential for an employer. There is no dearth of opportunities for a talented person. There are many organizations which are looking for such employees. If a person is not satisfied by the job he's doing, he may switch over to some other more suitable job. In today's environment it becomes very important for organizations to retain talented resources. Even now, talented resources are in need in all the verticals across the industries in India.

Every employee spends his most part of the day or even most part of his/ her life in the organization, directing his thinking, emotions and behaviours on accomplishing the task assigned to him. Most often the employee finds himself / herself working in a group, frequently interacting with the same members of the group almost every day. How every individual getting into to the group and manage the differences among the group members is a big challenge today.

Quite often the employee does not disclose his real emotions and motives or even does not confront /challenge constructively his colloquy simply because he /she may be afraid. When the employees works for a long duration in an organization one tends to accumulate the unhealthy emotions that results out of the trivial misunderstanding to major conflicts. It will not only affect the one's own performance, it also affects the whole team morale in the organization.

The Group Therapy / Group Counselling can play a significant role in which the therapist offers an empathetic and nonjudgmental environment where the employee can feel safe in revealing feelings or actions that have led to stress or tension in his or her professional and personal life.

Group therapy offers multiple relationships to assist an individual in growth and problem solving. In group therapy sessions, members are encouraged to discuss the issues openly and honestly. The therapist works to create an atmosphere of trust and acceptance that encourages members to support one another.

The group members can learn from the experiences of others in an open, trusted and confidential environment. It also creates a healthy atmosphere for self disclosure or revelation which could be an eye opening for each team member. The employee is also challenged of his/her dysfunctional perception or unhealthy behaviour. Group members can also provide emotional support and a safe forum to practice new behaviors. The understanding or the perception of each other is enhanced leading to higher level of energy and synergy in the group, making the working atmosphere and the relationship with each other so enriching and exciting.

There are numerous types of therapy that can be used to help a client overcome problems. In all cases, the goal of therapy is to provide a nonjudgmental environment that allows the client and therapy provider to work together towards a mutually agreed upon set of goals. This can create a transparent environment in the organisation.

FYMC can customize Group Therapy/ Counselling program for the group. We will first study the group requirement and plan the program forward as per the needs. • Hiccups happen when the diaphragm, the muscle that controls our breathing, becomes irritated and start to spasm and contract uncontrollably. With each contraction, air is pulled into the lungs very quickly, passes through the voice box, and then the epiglottis closes behind the rush of air, shaking the vocal chords, causing the "hic" sound. The irritation can be caused by rapid eating, emotional stress and even some diseases. The best cure? Breathing into a paper bag. This calms the diaphragm by increasing the amount of carbon dioxide in your bloodstream.

Windows Media Player 10

Windows Media Player 10, at the time of this writing, is Microsoft's latest release of media management software. It is available free of charge for Windows customers. The most popular feature is its ability to copy an audio CD and convert the copied audio files to be played on a digital audio device. The steps below will show you how to accomplish this:

  1. Insert the audio CD into your computer's CD drive.
Note: If your CD player is set to auto-start, a window titled "Audio CD" pops up. Just select "Take No Action" and click OK.

  2. Go to Start>> All Programs>> Windows Media Player

  3. Click Windows Media Player to start the program.

  4. Click the "Now Playing" tab, then click the "Rip" tab. A list of tracks for the loaded CD will now appear.

  5. Shown at the top of the tracks is the information bar. On the information bar lists; Title, Length, Artist along with other information pertaining to your CD. If you would like to have more or even less information about your CD listed in the Information bar, you can right click the information bar. You will now see many other options available. Placing a checkmark next to the item applies it to the information bar and unchecking it will remove it from the information bar. You can toggle the selection on and off by simply clicking on the item. If you have an Internet connection, click "Find Album Info" to have the information automatically filled in for the selected items.

  6. Right click the top of the Windows media Player window and from the resulting menu, select Tools>> Options.

  7. Select the "Rip Music" tab.

  8. Find the the "Rip Music to this location" option. This is where the files are to be stored on your hard drive. If you would like to change the location, just click "Change", then navigate to your preferred location. You can select the details that you would like to include in the file names by clicking on the "File name..." button.

  9. Under Rip settings, select the Format you wish to save your music to. The choices are:
    >> Windows Media Audio
    >> Windows Media Audio (variable bit rate)
    >> Windows Media Audio (lossless)
    >> mp3

  10. The three Windows Media Audio choices can result in better sounding audio files, but they are not as widely supported on digital audio players as is the mp3. Once you've selected your format, you will need to adjust the audio quality using the "Audio quality" slide bar. Moving the slider to the right will increase the bit rate (kbps=kilobits per second) which in turn creates better sound quality. Keep in mind that increasing the bit rate also increases the audio file size and will shrink the storage capacity of your CD.

  11. Once you have your settings selected, click Apply, then click OK to close the Options window. This will return you to the Windows Media Player window.
  12. In the Windows Media Player screen, you will see checkmarks next to each of the tracks. The checked selections will be copied to your hard drive, if you do not want to copy a certain selection, just click inside the checkbox to uncheck it.
  13. Now you're ready to copy your selections to your hard drive. Click "Rip Music". Then tick the entry stating that you would like to keep your current format settings. Then click OK. A progress bar will appear next to each song title as it is copied onto your hard drive. You can still uncheck a selection at this time, or click "Stop Rip" at any time.
  14. When all of the songs have been ripped, you're done! It is now safe to go ahead and eject your CD and put it away. Good job! Enjoy!!

Set all printers to be configured for double-sided printing, cutting paper use per print job by 50 percent.

Use cheap inks from reputable brands. (Canon, HP) But do not use pirated ink fills where some sellers just inject ink into the cartridge.

"Zoozoos in Vodafone TV Ads Aren't Animated"

Welcome to Zoo zoo land - the land of cute white funny creatures that feature in the Vodafone Zoozoo ad commercials. Every once in a while, along come TV characters which have a lasting impression on the minds and hearts of the people. Zoozoos are one such creation by the talented team at O & M(Ogilvy & Mather India)for the visionary brand of cellular communication Vodafone to convey different value added services offered by the mobile phone company including phone Backup, cricket alerts, etc

On first look, these "zoozoos" in Vodafone TV ads for IPL may resemble animated cartoon characters with an alien look or simply a stupid egg-head character with disproportional white bodies and black dots for eyes and mouth.

But the interesting part is that Zoo zoos are not animated characters but are actually slim women actors from local Mumbai theatres, dressed in white costumes and stuffed with foam to portray the characters.

This was something which was created purely out of textbook and is totally an Indian idea. The characters are such that they lead simple lives, speak insane and incomprehensible language and move in a certain way with human emotions.

We add great value to the individuals and the organizations by providing the psychological counselling to bring out the true potentials in every person, resolve their inner conflicts, produce a healthy atmosphere for sharing effective interpersonal relationships at work as well in the family.
