Dear Readers,
My advance Diwali Wishes to You and Your Family Members !
There is no recession for celebrations in Indian Life. Every
season, we have valid reasons and festivals to celebrate and
enjoy. Added to this, we hear that India's economy grew at
6.1% in the quarter ending June 2009. Clients are re-gaining
momentum and appearing confident. Hope for a great third quarter.
In spite of resources availability, meeting skilled manpower
is still a challenge in India. Now, nearly 44 percent of India's
labour force is illiterate, only 17 percent has secondary
schooling, and enrolment in higher education is a mere 11
percent. Organisation focus and importance towards employee
training can produce more competent resources, leaders too.
This is not the only solution, but it can be one of the solutions
to manage the skill gap.
October learning letter is reaching you during the season
of lights. Being aware, Sam's Story, Social Network Damages
are interesting articles which can move you. Wish you happy
reading. Take care.

Regards,
Prabakar

BECOMING
AWARE IS
THE BEGINNING
AUTHOR: PARAMAHAMSA NITHYANANDA

INTELLIGENCE is being aware and spontaneous.
When you are deeply aware, you cannot make mistakes. With awareness,
you don't rely on the past conditioning that has gone inside
you for many years. With deep awareness you are in the present
moment, alive and alert. Being Aware Your intelligence but its
very nature is spontaneous. It is only a question of awakening
from within.
The first step is to watch yourself and see how you unconsciously
react to situations. See how your actions are rooted in your
attitudes and conclusions from past experiences. Watching yourself
with awareness is first step. The good news about awareness
is - it is the only step that is needed.
Most of the time, we continue to live in the dead past and miss
the wonderful dimensions of life. Or we get angry over what
has happened and feel hurt. Or we blindly follow other people's
directions instead of relying on our own intelligence, because
it is easy to place responsibility and intelligence.
You say you are being obedient, but you are actually shirking
the responsibility of owing up to your actions. It is always
easy to put the blame on the whole world for what happened in
your life. But if you just look a little deeper; you can see
how you are completely responsible for what is happening in
your life.
We do many things unconsciously because we do not live every
moment with awareness and take responsibility for our words
and actions. Then, when the effects of these actions happen,
we claim we don't deserve the results, if you just look with
deep awareness, energy of intelligence - which is enough to
bring about the solution to your problems.
The very awareness is enough to break free from the past conditioning
and act intelligently. This awareness will simply kindle the
spark of intelligence that has always been a part of you. The
whole key lies in being aware so that your intelligence can
function.
Acting out of your own intelligence is taking complete responsibility
for what you do at all time. Follow your intelligence with the
clear understanding that you alone are responsible for your
actions. Then you will not hurt anyone including yourself. The
light of awareness is enough to remove the darkness created
by years of living by habit.

STORY
OF A RETAIL
H E R O

Sam
Walton
One
day, Wal-Mart's Sales Manager went to see Sam Walton in the
hospital. The moment he saw the sales manager, he asked him
"How is the sales? Have you achieved your target?" Five days
later he passed away. Sam Walton, Founder of Wal-Mart was the
person who showed the power of retail to the modern world.
He was having a small store, Ben Franklin franchise in Newport,
Ark. It took nearly five years for him to taste the profit.
That was his first store. Unfortunately, Sam was sick and sold
his store. "I had built the best variety
store in the whole region and worked hard in the community done
everything right and now I was being forced to leave town."
He didn't do well on his misfortune. Instead of that he bought
a new store. "I had to pick myself up
and get on with it, do it all over again, only even better this
time," That new store was start of what became the biggest
retailer in the world - Wal-mart Stores Inc.
Walton's will to turn setbacks into Opportunities was just one
of the secrets behind the building the building of his venture,
which reached the $100 billion annual-sales mark in 1997. In
five years, that number more than doubled to $218 billion.
In 1999 with 1,140,000 associates, Wal-Mart became a largest
private employer in the world.
Secrets of Sam Walton's Magic:
-
Keep
trying to improve: " If you ask Sam,'
how is business?' he's never satisfied," said Bernie Marcus,
Co-founder of Home depot, Made in America. In 1966, Walton
had five Wal-Mart stores in tiny towns, and they were doing
a booming $10 million in annual sales. But he kept looking
for ways to improve and expand his business and make it
more Efficient. That early emphasis on technology turned
out to be one of the keys to Wal-Mart's huge expansion.
His constant quest for improvement and growth also led him
to create Wal-Mart Supercenters, and Sam's Club warehouse
stores.
-
Learn
from the Competitors: Walton was relentless
about scrutinizing competition. He'd walk into Kmart with
yellow legal pad or tape recorder, quizzing clerks about
what & how much they ordered. But he didn't study rivals
just so he could under price them. He allowed himself to
learn more about competitor & business tactics.
"Everyone is doing something right".
"We're really not concerned with what (competitors) are
doing wrong; we're concerned with what they are doing right,"
Sam told managers.
-
Do
thing your own way: Although you should
learn from competitors, don't follow them blindly, Walton
advised, "Ignore the conventional wisdom," he said. "If
everybody else is doing it one way, there's a good chance
you can find your niche by going in exactly the opposite
direction.
"But be prepared for a lot of folks
to wave you down and tell you you're headed the wrong way."
Walton ignored the conventional wisdom during his time that
town with populations fewer than 50,000 couldn't support
a discount store for too long. Big retailer like target
and Kmart ignored these towns. That let Wal-Mart grow for
years without competition from any giant national discounters.
-
Lighten
Up: Walton took his business seriously,
but he wasn't afraid to laugh at himself. A little fun once
in a while also kept customer, Associates and shareholders
happy.
For example to keep managers
from revolting against his required Saturday morning meetings,
he'd try to make them fun. Sometimes he'd have surprise
visitors. Another time he had an executive sing "Red River
Valley." The tactic worked he kept manager's interest, and
business still got done. "Loosen up,
and everybody around you will loosen up," So "have fun.
Show enthusiasm - Always".
-
Do
what you Love: Showing enthusiasm
is easy if you love your work. And Walton loved retailing.
"I really like to pick an item maybe the most basic merchandise
and then call attention to it," he says that
"We would buy huge quantities of something and dramatize
it. We used to say you could sell anything if you hung it
from the ceiling." Because Walton loved his work,
long hours weren't drudgery. He often started his day at
the office at 4.30 am when his family travelled on vacations,
he insisted on stopping at all the local discount stores,
so he could see what they were up to.
"If
you love your work, you'll be out there every day trying to
do it the best you possibly can, and pretty soon everybody around
will catch the passion from you like a fever."

Engineering
is no more being a science and it is becoming an art and going
beyond our imagination. We are aware of new fly-over and bridges,
but imagine a bridge links Asia and Africa. Yes, it is even
hard to visualize but it is expected to be completed in the
year of 2020.
Bridge of Horns - World's longest bridge to link Asia and Africa,
The Bridge of the Horns, if it really gets built, will be one
of the great engineering feats of this century. This will be
"a new chapter in the history of humanity". It has been proposed
by a Dubai-based firm headed by Tare bin Laden. Opening date
is expected to be in the year 2020.

To
clear submarine and surface vessels, the proposed bridge will
have the longest suspension span in the world measuring 3.1
miles. It must allow very large ships in both directions simultaneously.
The overall length of the entire bridge spanning the Red Sea,
starting in Yemen, connecting to the island of Perim and continuing
on to Djibouti on the African continent, is expected to be roughly
28.5 km (18 miles) and the estimated price tag is about US$200
billion.
The Red Sea is one of the busiest and most important seaways
in the world and the construction as well as the service of
the bridge will have to allow this heavy transit. The bridge
will also allow much greater speed of transit and more cargo
and people to be transported from one point to another.
The suspension portion of the bridge will be the longest in
the world. There will be six lanes of vehicle roadway and 4
rail lines, allowing 100'000 cars and 50'000 rail riders to
cross the bridge every day.
Construction should begin in 2009. The first phase will consist
of a "signature bridge" spanning from Yemen to the island. The
second phase will extend the bridge to Africa.
The bridge is part of a large project from Noor City Development
Corporation (NCDC) and Middle East Development, from Dubai.
Passionate Engineers are waiting to see this engineering marvel.

Even
if you do not consider yourself an environmentalist,
a little fuel conservation can really help not just
the environment, but also your wallet! The price
of petrol seems to always be on the rise. The best
defence against rising gas prices is fuel conservation.
Some of the tips include:
>>
Keep your vehicle properly tuned, and it can get from
6 to 20 percent better gas mileage.
>> Replace your air filter.
>> Avoid rapid accelerating. In fact, you ought
to let up on the accelerator (by driving slower),
and when you use the accelerator, use it gently.
>> Turn off your vehicle when you are waiting
for someone.
>> Lessen your use of air conditioner. When
climate is good, switch off air conditioner.
>> Last but not the least; AVOID using the vehicle
where you could walk! That's the best option. Use
Public Transport or Company Provided Transports.
>> Combine Your Travel Plans to work place along
with your spouse, friends in order to save money and
fuel.

SOCIAL
NETWORKING WEBSITE DAMAGING
FAMILY RELATIONSHIPS

Social
Networking Websites are becoming inevitable for the
most of the corporate men, college students and retired
people at home. It is becoming a great ventilation point
and pay free recognitions which people long to receive.
Meeting friends after 15 years, getting professional
advises, learning more are the core advantages of Social
Networking Websites like Orkut, Facebook, Yahoo, etc.
What happens that, gradually this is eating the family
time and reducing the relationship status at home. At
the end of the day, knowingly or unknowingly at least
an hour in social networking website is common in most
of the families in city. "In the name of getting new
friends, people are creating more distances in relationship
at home". Surprisingly, Social Networking Websites are
one of the reasons quoted for raising divorce rate.
Youngsters and Middle aged men are becoming addicted
to iphone and social networking sites day by day. Especially
among the middle aged men and women, this is becoming
more popular now.
No doubt, It has encouraged new ways to communicate
and share information. Since their introduction, social
network sites (SNSs) such as Orkut, MySpace, Facebook,
Yahoo! 360, Twitter, Cyworld, and Bebo have attracted
millions of users, many of whom have integrated these
sites into their daily practices.
There are also dangers associated with social networking:
data theft and viruses are on the rise. The most prevalent
danger though often involves online predators or individuals
who claim to be someone that they are not. There are
lots of uninvited guests who are watching you without
your knowledge through these sites, shared by a lawyer.
Above all, Social Networking Websites are disturbing
the family networking. Right way of usage can make Social
Networking Websites effective, else it can create gaps
between family members gradually.

Well,
ever tried to know how the much used Aspirin for Head
Aches was discovered? If not check it out
Felix Hoffmann, a chemist while experimenting with a waste
product of one of the dye components to find relief for
his father's rheumatism, chemically synthesized a stable
form of salicylic acid powder. The compound became the
active ingredient in the pharmaceutical wonder product:
Aspirin
However, Hoffmann did not discover "aspirin." He "rediscovered"
it after studying experiments on acetylsalicylic acid
made 40 years earlier by French chemist Charles Gergardt.
In 1837, Gergardt produced good results, but the procedure
was difficult and time consuming. He decided that it was
not practical, and set it aside. But Gerhardt knew quite
well about potential cures of acetylsalicylic acid because
it had been proclaimed for more than 3 500 years!
The breakthrough Although it relieved pain, the willow
bark extract, salicylic acid, caused severe stomach and
mouth irritation. Hoffmann's breakthrough came on 10 August
1897 when he produced the first 100% chemically pure form
of acetylsalicylic acid, thus without the free salicylic
acid. On 6 March 1899, Bayer registered Aspirin as a trademark.
Not without a challenge, though. In fact, initially it
received trade certificates only in the US. In England
and Germany, other companies challenged the patents, citing
their own research. Hoffmann's written evidence prevailed,
and when he retired in 1928, Aspirin was known throughout
the world. He, however, lived unrecognized until his death
on 8 February 1946 in Switzerland.

MOVIES
THAT MOVE
SUNSET BOULEVARD

Sunset
Blvd., a film directed by Billy Wilder is a story
of classical drama. The narration begins with the
murder of Joe Gilles, an unsuccessful film writer
who aims Paramount Pictures to save his car from a
bank. A ray of hope comes in the form of Norma Desmond,
a once famous silent-film actress who recognises his
skill and gives him a job to edit the script she had
written for her "comeback" into Hollywood. Unfortunately
the script gets rejected at Paramount Pictures, but
De Mille agrees on her plans for shooting the film
just to please her. At this point passions become
possession when the melancholy actress interferes
in Gilles personal affair. Angry Gilles tries to leave
Norma Desmond and deserts her. By now the climax arrives
when curious reporters and news cameras arrive at
her house to film her. Norma's dream gets fulfilled
at a cost. The bottom-line is how persuasions towards
retain recognition can blind reality.

Just
In Time or JIT as it is commonly called is a process of
supplying the parts only when the assembly process requires
them. Just In time was pioneered by Taiichi Ohno
in Japan at the Toyota car assembly plants in the early
1970's. Historically JIT philosophy arose because of two
other things:
-
Japan's
wish to improve the production quality. At that time
Japan's companies had a bad reputation as far as quality
of manufacturing and quality of car
manufacturing in particular was concerned.
-
"Kaizen,
also a Japan's method of continuous improvement."
Typical
JIT implementations include:
